Lake Grenada, Mississippi – In an extraordinary turn of events in June 2024, three fishermen rescued 38 exhausted dogs from Lake Grenada after the animals became disoriented during a fox run. Bob Gist, Brad Carlisle, and their fishing guide Jordan Chrestman were on the lake when they spotted numerous dogs struggling in the water, transforming their recreational outing into a critical life-saving mission. The hounds, all equipped with GPS collars, had reportedly chased a deer into the lake but subsequently lost their bearings and faced imminent danger of drowning.
"There were dogs everywhere," Gist recalled, describing the scene where the animals were "kind of swimming in circles and didn't know which direction to go." The trio quickly began pulling the struggling dogs into their small boat, ferrying them back to shore in multiple trips. This arduous process continued for hours as they worked to save every animal.
After several successful rescues, the fishermen believed all dogs were safe until one owner checked a GPS tracker, revealing that four dogs were still in the water. The rescuers promptly returned to the lake, finding these final dogs on the verge of sinking beneath the surface. They were successfully pulled to safety, bringing the total number of rescued dogs to 38.
Gist emphasized that the true hero of the day was guide Jordan Chrestman, who first spotted the distressed animals. "If it wasn't for Jordan, there would have been 38 dead dogs," Gist stated, highlighting Chrestman's crucial role in averting a tragedy. Reflecting on the incident, Gist shared a broader sentiment: "Opportunities to help somebody are in front of us all the time. Sometimes if you see something, do something." The fishermen's swift and compassionate actions ensured the survival of all the dogs involved in the incident.
