Imagine paying for software… that nobody opens anymore.
No logins.
No dashboards.
No seats.
Just an AI agent quietly doing the job across five different tools while your team sleeps.
That's the future Gartner just put a price tag on.
And the number is loud.
By 2030, Gartner says up to $234 billion of enterprise software spend is at risk from something they're calling agentic arbitrage.
Translation: AI agents doing tasks across systems — so you no longer need to buy, log into, or pay per-seat for each one.
Agentic AI is projected to swallow ~20% of enterprise SaaS spending by the end of the decade.
That's one in five dollars. Gone from the old model.
For 20 years, SaaS sold you a beautiful interface.
Clean dashboards. Slick workflows. Charge per user. Repeat.
But agents don't care about UI.
They call APIs. They chain tasks. They deliver outcomes.
George Brocklehurst, Gartner's Managing VP, put it bluntly:
"Agentic systems deliver outcomes directly… making the software invisible."
And when software goes invisible, the link between user growth and revenue growth — the entire SaaS bible — snaps.
The industry already has a nickname for it.
And the damage has started:
Seat-based pricing? Under siege.
Legacy dashboards? Becoming museum pieces.
Brocklehurst isn't calling the funeral just yet.
"SaaS will not be destroyed," he says. "It will emerge in a different form."
The winners won't be the ones clinging to logins and license counts.
They'll be the ones building the horizontal agentic platforms — the rails agents ride on across every workflow.
Outcome-based pricing. Cross-domain orchestration. Invisible software.
Every big platform shift kills a pricing model before it kills a company.
On-prem died to subscriptions.
Subscriptions are now dying to outcomes.
The next trillion-dollar software company might not sell you seats at all.
It'll just send you a bill for the work it quietly finished.
That's all for now!
