San Francisco-based Andromeda Surgical, a pioneer in autonomous surgical robotics, has successfully closed a $15 million Series A funding round, elevating its total capital raised to $30 million. The investment, led by Standard Capital, aims to accelerate the commercial launch and global expansion of its AI-assisted surgical platform designed to enhance surgical precision and outcomes. The company's co-founder and CEO, Nick Damiano, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, "Could not imagine a better partner as we bring autonomous surgery to the world."
Andromeda Surgical, founded in 2023 by Nick Damiano and Kartik Tiwari, is focused on developing advanced robotic systems that augment surgeons' capabilities, initially targeting urological procedures. Their platform utilizes a GPS-like localization system to assist surgeons in complex operations, addressing a critical need to reduce complication rates and standardize surgical excellence. The company emphasizes a hardware-lite approach, prioritizing sophisticated software to drive its innovative solutions.
The Series A round saw participation from a diverse group of investors, including Y Combinator, VOX Capital, Lingotto Innovation, Cybernetix Ventures, NZVC, WestWave Capital, Zelda Ventures, Alumni Ventures, Rebel Fund, Zeno Partners, Techable VC, and prior investor Pioneer Fund. Standard Capital, founded by Y Combinator partners Dalton Caldwell and Paul Buchheit, is known for backing early-stage technology companies with strong technical founders. This strategic alignment underscores Andromeda Surgical's potential in the rapidly evolving medical technology landscape.
Andromeda Surgical's technology has already been cleared for launch in Canada and New Zealand, with initial commercial systems expected to enter hospitals within the next two months. The company's initial focus is on endourology, specifically procedures like holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), which treats conditions such as enlarged prostate, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and kidney stones. Damiano highlighted the platform's efficiency, noting enucleation times as fast as 30 minutes, significantly faster than the published average of approximately 90 minutes.
The company plans to utilize the new capital to scale its commercial operations, expand into additional urological procedures, and further develop its autonomous capabilities. With a long-term vision to empower all surgeons to perform at an expert level, Andromeda Surgical is positioning itself to address the estimated 1 million avoidable deaths and $1 trillion in excess costs worldwide each year attributed to gaps in surgical skill and efficiency. Damiano stated, "Surgery will soon become one of the most important applications of physical AI. Andromeda is ready to lead the way."
