Arc, an artificial intelligence startup, has successfully closed a $10.76 million seed funding round. The investment was led by prominent venture capital firm a16z (Andreessen Horowitz), with additional participation from Adverb Ventures, Broadway Restaurant Group, and United Talent Agency. This significant capital injection aims to modernize the outdated technology currently powering an estimated 200,000 U.S. drive-thrus.
The company, co-founded by Ali Hussain and Michael MacLennan—both veterans from Square and Cash App—is developing AI voice agents designed to optimize drive-thru operations. Hussain announced the funding on social media, stating, "Today @MeetArc announces our $10.76M Seed led by @a16z, with participation from @Adverbvc , Broadway Restaurant Group, and @unitedtalent." He highlighted the company's mission: "Arc lets operators run them like modern digital channels: design the experience, A/B test upsell, see live AI insights."
Arc’s technology focuses on enhancing customer experience and operational efficiency by allowing restaurants to design unique drive-thru interactions, A/B test upsell strategies, and gain real-time AI-driven insights. This approach is expected to lead to "Higher tickets. Better accuracy. Happier crews," as noted in Hussain's tweet. Olivia Moore, the a16z partner who led the round, emphasized the team's strength, acknowledging the challenging environment of drive-thru operations.
The funding underscores a growing trend in venture capital towards AI solutions for traditional industries. A16z has been actively investing in AI infrastructure and applications, viewing compliance and other manual processes as ripe for AI transformation. Arc's initial focus on drive-thrus addresses a critical need in the fast-food sector, which has seen increased demand for speed and efficiency.
Looking ahead, Arc plans to expand its AI empowerment beyond drive-thrus to various local businesses. The company expressed gratitude for its investors, noting they "deeply understand local commerce, AI, and the restaurant industry." This strategic backing positions Arc to become a key player in the digital transformation of local commerce, starting with the high-volume drive-thru market.
