Cognition AI, the Silicon Valley-based developer of the autonomous AI software engineer Devin, has recently closed a funding round exceeding $1 billion, propelling its valuation past $26 billion. This significant investment underscores the growing confidence in Devin's capabilities to revolutionize software development. Danny Crichton, a prominent observer of the tech landscape, lauded the company, stating in a tweet, "> .@cognition, @ScottWu46 and the whole team is one of the most extraordinary startups that has ever emerged from Silicon Valley."

The latest funding round saw participation from venture firms Lux Capital, General Catalyst, and 8VC, who co-led the financing, alongside existing investors like Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and Ribbit Capital. This capital injection more than doubles Cognition's valuation from a prior round in September 2025, when it secured $400 million, highlighting rapid investor interest in the AI coding sector.

Devin, Cognition's flagship product, functions as the world's first fully autonomous AI software engineer. It can plan, execute, and debug complex engineering tasks using its own shell, code editor, and browser within a sandboxed environment. The company reports an annualized revenue run-rate of $492 million, with enterprise usage of Devin growing 50% month-over-month over the past six months, attracting major clients such as Mercedes-Benz, NASA, Goldman Sachs, and various U.S. government entities.

Crichton's tweet further emphasized the company's strong foundation, noting, "> My favorite fact: about half of the first 50 employees were entrepreneurs themselves. It's incredible talent density that will serve Devin well." This entrepreneurial spirit and high talent concentration, led by CEO Scott Wu, are seen as crucial drivers behind Cognition's swift advancements and market penetration. Internally, Cognition utilizes Devin extensively, with the AI agent now writing over 90% of the company's own codebase.

While Devin has garnered significant praise for its potential to accelerate engineering efficiency and reduce development costs, it has also faced some skepticism regarding its real-world performance. Despite this, Cognition continues to forge strategic partnerships, including one with Microsoft Azure for scalable infrastructure and a collaboration with Infosys to integrate Devin into global enterprise engineering ecosystems, further solidifying its market position and future growth prospects.
