Brian Armstrong, CEO of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, stated on July 27, 2026, that artificial intelligence (AI) agents are projected to "eventually transact far more per day than all humans combined." This bold forecast, shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter), highlights a future where AI-driven financial activities could significantly reshape global commerce and payment systems. Armstrong presented this as a long-term outlook for payments and other financial interactions online.

Armstrong emphasized that crypto should be viewed as foundational infrastructure for AI, akin to electricity or the internet, rather than a technology to be abandoned in favor of AI. He rejected the "pivot to AI" mindset, calling it "zero-sum, scarcity thinking," and argued that autonomous AI agents will necessitate their own financial systems. These agents, he explained, cannot open traditional bank accounts or endure lengthy wire transfer times, thus requiring "real time programmable money."

Coinbase is actively positioning itself to facilitate this future, leveraging its existing technologies to support automated payments between AI agents and digital services. Armstrong specifically highlighted the company's work with its Layer-2 network Base, the stablecoin USDC, and the x402 protocol. These tools are designed to provide the necessary rails for AI agents to hold funds and execute payments autonomously and efficiently.

The burgeoning AI-agent token market has already demonstrated significant activity, reaching approximately $22.8 billion, with Virtual Protocol recording over 23,500 active wallets and around $479 million in AI-driven economic activity by March 2026. Coinbase has previously noted that AI agents are already utilizing the x402 protocol to purchase data, computing resources, and various digital services. This emerging ecosystem underscores the strategic importance of crypto in enabling the predicted surge in AI-driven transactions.
