A team of former Pinterest engineers and designers, operating under the company BuildForever, has launched an innovative email inbox solution called Extra, recently securing $9.5 million in seed funding. The new product aims to fundamentally reimagine email management, moving away from traditional folders and subject lines to an AI-driven, context-aware organization system. The funding round was led by Abstract, A* (Kevin Hartz), Felicis, and Elad Gil, with notable angel investors including Pinterest co-founders Ben Silbermann and Evan Sharp, and Gmail creator Paul Buchheit.
Extra distinguishes itself by organizing inboxes around a "Today" tab, which surfaces the most critical and actionable information, and automatically categorizes other emails into personalized tabs such as family, travel, or finance. This approach seeks to alleviate the common problem of email overload by presenting information in a digestible and prioritized format. The product is currently available on iOS and web, and integrates with Gmail, with plans for broader compatibility and monetization in the future.
Despite extensive use of artificial intelligence in its core functionality, the company has deliberately chosen not to market Extra as an "AI app," a strategy highlighted by industry observers. As CEO Naveen Gavini, a former SVP and chief product officer at Pinterest, explained, "When you mention AI, it kind of feels a little 'power, user-y.' People don’t really need that. They just want their basic problems solved. That’s what we’re focused on — solving those user problems, versus pitching the next AI that can do everything." This nuanced positioning avoids what some refer to as "AI washing," focusing instead on tangible user benefits.
The founding team, including Steven Ramkumar and Albert Pereta, also veterans of Pinterest, aims to bring a design-centric and user-delight approach to a typically anxiety-inducing tool. Beta testers have already reported significant improvements, with over 2 million emails per year unsubscribed and 4 million emails transformed into "Today" view summaries, according to the company. Extra is free to use, with monetization strategies to be introduced at a later stage.
