Google AI Studio has enabled the creation of over 250,000 native Android applications within a week of launching a new no-code feature, according to Logan Kilpatrick, a member of technical staff working on Gemini at Google. This significant uptake highlights a major shift in app development, making it accessible to individuals without prior coding experience.
"We just launched the ability to build native Android apps directly in Google AI Studio for free!" Kilpatrick announced on social media. He added, "Likely >99% of these folks never built an Android app before, everyone can now build, no coding required!"
The new functionality, unveiled at Google I/O 2026, allows users to generate high-quality, Kotlin-based Android apps using natural language prompts. This eliminates the need for complex software installations or extensive coding knowledge, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for aspiring app creators. Users can describe their desired app, and the Antigravity Agent within AI Studio generates the complete project.
Google AI Studio integrates a browser-based Android emulator, enabling real-time preview and interaction with the app during development. Once an app is created, users can install it directly onto a physical Android device via USB or publish it to an internal testing track on Google Play. This streamlined workflow supports rapid prototyping and testing.
While the feature democratizes app creation, it also raises discussions about app quality and discoverability on platforms like the Google Play Store. Kilpatrick acknowledged these concerns, emphasizing that while many might build apps for personal use, those aiming for public distribution must still meet high-quality standards. Google is reportedly working on future updates, including direct publishing to the Play Store.
