Living Carbon, a biotechnology company focused on developing photosynthesis-enhanced trees, has secured a significant $500 million investment from Octopus Energy Generation. This substantial funding is earmarked for expanding the deployment of Living Carbon's carbon-removing trees across degraded lands in the United States, with an ambitious goal of removing gigatons of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The investment highlights a growing trend in leveraging biotechnological solutions for large-scale climate mitigation.

The funding, provided through Octopus Energy Generation's newly launched Gigaton Fund, will enable Living Carbon to plant millions of its specially engineered trees. These trees are designed to grow faster and capture more carbon than conventional varieties, offering a novel approach to reforestation and carbon sequestration. Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, lauded the effort, stating in a tweet, > "This is what it looks like when founders take on hard, physical-world problems and execute. @Living_Carbon just secured $500M from Octopus Energy Generation to reforest degraded American land. At full scale: removing the equivalent of NYC's annual carbon footprint."

Living Carbon's core innovation involves genetically engineering poplar trees to enhance their photosynthetic efficiency. By inserting genes, including some from squash and green algae, the company's trees reduce photorespiration, a process that typically wastes energy and releases fixed carbon as CO2. This modification allows the trees to channel more energy into growth, resulting in increased biomass and a greater capacity for carbon capture.

The company aims to utilize this technology to reforest areas where natural ecosystems are struggling, such as abandoned mine lands. This strategic focus ensures that the enhanced trees contribute to carbon removal without displacing existing healthy forests. The initiative projects a potential to remove carbon equivalent to New York City's annual carbon footprint at full scale, demonstrating the significant environmental impact anticipated from this partnership.

Octopus Energy Generation, a major investor in renewable energy, established its Gigaton Fund to specifically back global climate solutions. Their investment in Living Carbon underscores confidence in biotechnological approaches to accelerate the transition to a net-zero economy. This collaboration is expected to significantly advance the application of nature-based solutions augmented by scientific innovation in the fight against climate change.
