A reunion of the original founders of Justin.tv and its successor, Twitch, has drawn attention to the enduring legacy of the live-streaming pioneers. Michael Seibel, a co-founder, shared a photo on social media, lightheartedly remarking, "> Look at these old men :)" in reference to the gathering. The event marks nearly 20 years since the launch of Justin.tv, the platform that laid the groundwork for modern live video broadcasting.

Justin.tv was launched on March 19, 2007, by Justin Kan, Emmett Shear, Michael Seibel, and Kyle Vogt. Initially, the platform gained notoriety for "lifecasting," with co-founder Justin Kan broadcasting his daily life 24/7. This innovative approach quickly evolved, opening the platform to allow anyone to stream content, fostering a new era of user-generated live video.

The company made a pivotal strategic move in June 2011 by spinning off its gaming content into a dedicated service, Twitch.tv. This decision proved highly successful, with Twitch rapidly eclipsing its parent company. In February 2014, the umbrella company rebranded as Twitch Interactive, and Justin.tv was officially shut down in August of the same year to focus entirely on the burgeoning gaming platform. Amazon subsequently acquired Twitch for $970 million in August 2014.

Since their initial venture, the founders have continued to shape the tech landscape. Michael Seibel, for instance, became a prominent figure at Y Combinator, serving as CEO of its accelerator and recently transitioning to a Partner Emeritus role after over 12 years. Emmett Shear led Twitch as CEO for more than a decade before stepping down in March 2023. Justin Kan has founded multiple startups and remains an active investor and entrepreneur.

The reunion underscores the significant impact these individuals had on digital media, transforming how content is created and consumed online. Their early vision with Justin.tv, and its subsequent evolution into Twitch, established live streaming as a mainstream form of entertainment and communication, influencing countless platforms and creators worldwide.
