Plane.so, the open-source and AI-native project management platform, has announced the general availability of its new "Releases" feature, designed to centralize and optimize the software release lifecycle for development teams. The update aims to address the fragmented approach often seen in traditional release management, integrating planning, tracking, and publishing capabilities into a single system. This launch comes as the open-source project management software market is projected to reach $3.8 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 13.2%.
The new "Releases" feature allows teams to group work items from any project under a named release, providing a unified view of all contributing tasks, issues, and epics. "Releases are now generally available in Plane," the company stated in a recent tweet. "Group work items from any project under a named release [and] Progress bar updates as work item states change." This functionality ensures stakeholders have a clear understanding of release scope, goals, and timelines.
A key component of the new offering is the integrated changelog publishing, enabling users to write and publish release notes directly within Plane. This eliminates the need for external tools, ensuring changelogs are consistently up-to-date. The company highlighted, "Write and publish the changelog on the same page," emphasizing the streamlined documentation process.
Complementing the "Releases" feature are two new custom property types: the Release picker and the Formula field. The Release picker automatically routes work items into a release's Scope tab when assigned, simplifying management. The Formula field, a powerful addition, computes values based on other work item properties, offering dynamic data analysis for more informed decision-making.
Plane positions itself as a robust alternative to proprietary solutions like Jira and Linear, offering cloud, self-hosted, and air-gapped deployment options. The introduction of "Releases" underscores the platform's commitment to enhancing efficiency, collaboration, and transparency for software development teams, aligning with broader industry trends towards integrated and flexible project management solutions.
