Then traced their B cells backward — step by step — to the exact HIV fragment that started it all.
That fragment became the vaccine.
"How could we flip the whole immune response on its head," asked lead scientist Shane Crotty, "so the rare responses become the common responses?"
That's the whole game right there.
Rhesus macaques. Real animals. Real immune systems.
44% of them produced these elusive, virus-neutralising antibodies — in meaningful quantities.
Not a lab dish.

A living, mutating, glycan-covered enemy — and nearly half the animals fought it off with textbook-perfect antibodies.

It's the product of 14 years of grinding collaboration inside the Scripps Consortium for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Development.
