🧬 First, what is CRISPR actually doing here?

Corteva's Dr Wendy Srnic framed it as building "a more resilient global food system" for smallholder farmers.

Translation: this isn't a press-release partnership. It's an actual commercialization pathway.


🍚 Why the timing matters

Rewind to May 2025.

India celebrated releasing the world's first genome-edited rice varieties — Kamala and Pusa DST Rice 1 — built for higher yields and lower water use.

Great science.

But a quieter problem lingered: CRISPR-Cas9 sits behind a tangled web of global patents, and turning lab breakthroughs into farmer-ready seeds at scale has been genuinely hard for Indian public institutions to navigate.

ICRISAT just found a legal door through that maze.
