And yet, the tech that could make managing it painless still costs a small fortune.

Until now.

Scientists at IISc Bengaluru just built something that sounds like science fiction.

They call it SugarSight.

An AI system that thinks like a pancreas.

Here's the twist.

It wasn't built by doctors.

It was built by a professor of aerospace engineering.

Prof Radhakant Padhi spent nearly 10 years adapting algorithms — the kind used to guide rockets and stabilise aircraft — to solve a completely different problem.

How much insulin does a human body need, second by second?

Think about it.

A rocket needs constant course correction.

Too much thrust, it overshoots. Too little, it falls short.

A human body needs the exact same precision with insulin.

👉 A person needs just half a millilitre of insulin a day.

👉 Slightly too much = hypoglycaemia.

👉 Slightly too little = dangerously high sugar.

That margin is razor thin. Rocket-science thin.

Out of reach for most Indian families.

IISc's target?

₹2 lakh.

A closed-loop system — sensor, brain, and pump — built indigenously, at a third of the price.


The prototype already exists.

It's now heading toward medical certification.

At the launch event, former CM BS Yediyurappa put it simply: innovation means nothing if it stays in a lab and never reaches a village.

That's the real story here.
