But this could quietly fix one of India's biggest energy problems.

India imports almost 100% of its lithium-ion battery cells.

Mostly from China.

And domestic lithium mining? Still 8-10 years away from scale.

That's a massive gap for a country betting big on EVs and clean energy.

Instead of digging for new lithium, why not harvest it from batteries already dead in drawers and landfills?

That's exactly what a new lab in Bengaluru is doing.

Atria University + MiniMines Cleantech Solutions have built the MiniMines-AU Laboratory for Sustainable Resource Recovery.

Their tool of choice? Engineered microbes.


🧠 Where AI comes in

Normally, finding the right microbe to "eat" metal out of battery waste takes years of trial and error.

AI is cutting that timeline down.

It helps scientists spot and improve promising microbial strains faster.

The target chemistry: lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries — the same ones powering a growing share of EVs and grid storage.

The goal:

  • 🔋 Recover lithium efficiently

  • ⚗️ Preserve high-grade iron phosphate, usually wrecked in traditional chemical recycling

  • 🏭 Test if this bio-process can scale to industrial size


💰 The bigger picture

This isn't a standalone science experiment.

It slots straight into India's National Critical Mineral Mission — a ₹34,300 crore, seven-year push to reduce import dependence.

The Mines Ministry has already approved 58 companies under a ₹1,500 crore recycling incentive scheme, chasing 400 kilotonnes of recovered material.

Urban mining — pulling minerals from e-waste instead of the earth — is becoming the pragmatic shortcut everyone's racing toward.

"Securing critical minerals is central to India's clean-energy transition and economic resilience," said Atria's Vice-Chancellor, Dr Madhavan Nair Rajeevan.


⚡ Why this is bigger than one lab

Mining takes years. Geopolitics can choke supply overnight.

But a dead battery is already sitting in your drawer, right now.

If AI-guided biology can turn that waste into usable lithium at scale, India doesn't just recycle batteries.

It builds a mineral supply chain that no other country can cut off.
