Because the reason lab monkeys just hit $26,294 each isn't a shortage crisis.

In June, a Chinese state lab bought 40 cynomolgus monkeys — the small, human-like primates used in drug safety trials — for 178,000 yuan each.

That's nearly double what they cost a year ago.

Just swap silicon for primates.

In the AI world, companies fight over GPU capacity to train models.

In Chinese biotech right now, companies are fighting over monkey capacity to prove their drugs are safe.

Same scramble.

Different bottleneck.

And here's the part that makes it worse — Chinese regulators require monkeys used in toxicology testing to be at least three years old.

You can't breed your way out of a shortage overnight.

Once the bottleneck forms, it's stuck there for years.


⏳ The real cost isn't just money — it's time

Planning a monkey study used to be routine.

Now it can take four to ten extra months, according to China-based consultant Harri Jarvelainen.

For an industry that treats speed to clinic as its biggest competitive weapon over Western rivals, that delay stings.

Some numbers to put the squeeze in perspective:

  • 🇨🇳 China: monkeys near $26,000 each, could top $29,000+ (200,000 yuan) next year

  • 🇺🇸 US: prices topped $50,000 as recently as 2024, with ~60,000 monkeys used annually

  • 🇫🇷 France: costs hit €30,000, pushing the national research center to build its own breeding capacity

This isn't a China-only squeeze. It's a global one — China's is just moving fastest.


🔥 Somebody's getting very rich off this

Contract research giants like WuXi AppTec, Pharmaron and Joinn Laboratories saw this coming years ago and built their own monkey breeding farms.

Now that foresight is paying off — literally.

Joinn Laboratories just forecast a 13-fold jump in first-half profit, largely thanks to the soaring value of its own research monkey stockpile.

Analysts at Zheshang Securities estimate an annual shortfall of 15,000 to 20,000 monkeys through 2028.

Imports from Cambodia — paused during Covid — resumed this year to help close the gap.


🌊 The bigger picture

This has happened before.

During Covid, a rush of vaccine programs sent monkey prices soaring worldwide.

This time, there's no pandemic forcing the demand.

Just an entire country's biotech sector accelerating faster than the biological supply chain can keep up.

As Jarvelainen put it: "The good news is that it's clearly a result of booming business."

A $26,000 monkey sounds absurd on its own.

But it's really a receipt — proof of just how hard China is racing to own the future of drug development.
