Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine blasted these fungi with ionising radiation.

The melanin inside them changed its electronic properties.

Electron transfer got more efficient.

And the fungi grew faster than their non-melanised cousins.

Think of melanin like chlorophyll's dark cousin — except instead of sunlight, it seems to convert gamma rays into a metabolic boost.

Nature basically built a solar panel for nuclear fallout.


🚀 Then NASA got interested

Because here's the problem with deep-space travel:

Cosmic radiation shreds DNA. Traditional shielding is heavy. Heavy = expensive = impossible for Mars.

So they sent Cladosporium sphaerospermum to the International Space Station.

The result?

👉 A paper-thin layer of the fungus blocked around 2% of incoming radiation.

Sounds tiny. It isn't.

Scaled up, a layer just a few centimetres thick could meaningfully shield a Mars habitat.

And the wild part?

It grows itself back.

A living, self-healing wall of mold protecting astronauts millions of miles from home. 🤯


🧬 The medical twist

Back on Earth, oncologists are watching closely.

Cancer radiotherapy has one brutal flaw: it fries healthy tissue along with tumours.

Melanin-based compounds derived from these fungi could act as a biological shield — protecting good cells while the beam does its job on the bad ones.

Other labs are testing them for radioactive waste cleanup.
