
Bees have been eating "balanced meals" for years that were secretly missing the one nutrient they can't survive without.
Nobody noticed. Until now.
Here's the twist: honeybees cannot make fats called sterols inside their own bodies.
They can't get them anywhere else either.
Flower pollen is the only source. And flowers are disappearing.
Beekeepers have relied on artificial pollen substitutes for years when natural pollen runs short.
Problem: these products were never actually complete.
A gap nobody could close. Until Oxford tried something completely different.
A team led by the University of Oxford turned to a yeast called Yarrowia lipolytica and engineered it to manufacture six essential pollen sterols.
Sterols so rare in nature, scientists say, they could never be harvested from flowers at any real scale.
Lead researcher Dr Elynor Moore compared it to human nutrition: this is the difference between eating complete meals versus meals consistently missing essential fatty acids.
Colonies fed the sterol-enriched superfood produced up to 15 times more young brood than colonies on standard substitutes.
That's not a tweak. That's a lifeline.
More young bees means stronger colonies heading into food shortages and rough seasons ahead.
Honeybees pollinate roughly 1 in 3 bites of food humans eat.
There's a bonus too — easing pressure on managed hives near crops like almonds and cherries could mean less competition for wild bees fighting for the same scarce wildflowers.
And it's not the only effort in motion.
A separate feed from Washington State University and APIX Biosciences is already being field tested, with a targeted US launch in 2026.
Two different labs. Same mission.
Feeding bees properly might just be the quiet fix agriculture didn't know it needed.
