A Dutch scientist looked at cracked concrete and asked a strange question: what if it could heal like skin?

💸 Why this could actually save billions

This isn't just a lab curiosity.

In the EU alone, maintaining bridges, tunnels and retaining walls already costs €4 to 6 billion a year.

Studies suggest self-healing concrete could shave off over €120 million annually just from tunnels and retaining walls.

And the bacteria themselves?

They can reportedly stay viable inside concrete for up to 200 years.

Let that sink in.

A material that quietly patches itself for two centuries.


⚡ The catch

It's not cheap yet.

Bio-concrete currently costs roughly double standard concrete per cubic metre.

Jonkers is working on encapsulation methods that could cut that price by half.

Until then, it's being trialled on the structures that hurt most to repair — offshore platforms, dams, railway bridges, underground tunnels.
