🌱 The plan sounds absurd. Until you see it work.

The team cultivated cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) — a plant virus with a superpower.

It doesn't infect humans. But it does wake up the human immune system and point it straight at cancer cells. 🎯

Think of it as a farmable cancer immunotherapy.

They grew it on two hosts:

  • 🌿 Nicotiana benthamiana — a cousin of the tobacco plant
  • 🫘 Black-eyed pea (Vigna unguiculata) — grows the virus and feeds the crew

One plant. Medicine and dinner. On a spacecraft where every square centimetre is a war.


🛰️ The microgravity hack was pure MacGyver

To fake weightlessness on Earth, they mounted the plants on a random positioning machine that tumbles in 3D.

The brain running it?

A Raspberry Pi. Custom Python script. That's it.

Harvesting was the elegant part.

Instead of killing the plant, they vacuum-pulled fluid straight from the leaves…

then spun it in a centrifuge to isolate the viral extract.

👉 And guess what the ISS already has on board? A lab-grade centrifuge.
