
Scientists in Cuttack just used an AI-invented enzyme to edit rice DNA — and it worked almost as well as the tool that won a Nobel Prize.
Meet OpenCRISPR-1.
It wasn't discovered in a bacterium, like every gene-editing enzyme before it.
It was dreamed up by a language model.
Profluent Bio trained AI on over a million natural CRISPR systems, then asked it to write a brand new one from scratch.
The result: a 1,380-amino-acid enzyme, over 400 spots different from Cas9.
But nobody knew if a machine's invention could survive inside a plant cell.
Dr Kutubuddin Ali Molla's team at India's National Rice Research Institute adapted it for rice, renamed it POC1, and pointed it at real genes.
The results:
An enzyme no organism ever made — holding its own against nature's best.
Cas9 is trapped in a thicket of foreign patents.
Every Indian company using it pays licensing fees — costs that eventually land on farmers.
OpenCRISPR-1 was released open-source, precisely to dodge that trap.
(Profluent Bio does hold a patent on it — but says it's meant to unlock access, not restrict it.)
For India, that's huge.
India already exempted gentle gene-editing from GMO rules in 2022, and cleared its first two gene-edited rice varieties in 2025.
An open, patent-light AI tool could mean India stops importing gene-editing IP — and starts building its own climate-resilient crops, faster and cheaper.
POC1 isn't a miracle yet.
In whole-plant trials, it edited 36% of lines versus Cas9's 48%.
Off-target risks haven't been checked in plants at all.
And everything so far rests on one crop: rice.
Still — something quietly historic happened in that lab.
The grain that's fed India for 10,000 years just got rewritten by an intelligence that was never alive.
Curiosity carried the team through the wait, Dr Molla says.
This time, curiosity edited a genome.
