Universal Music Group (UMG) and TikTok have renewed their multi-year licensing agreement, placing a significant emphasis on combating unauthorized artificial intelligence (AI) generated music and enhancing protections for human artistry. The deal, announced on May 22, 2026, builds upon a previous resolution in 2024 that followed a high-profile dispute between the two entities. This new agreement aims to further safeguard artists and songwriters in the evolving digital landscape.
The renewed partnership comes after a period of tension in early 2024 when UMG temporarily removed its extensive music catalog from TikTok. UMG had accused the platform of inadequately addressing issues related to AI-generated music, copyright infringement, and fair artist compensation. A subsequent agreement in May 2024 saw UMG's music return to TikTok, introducing initial safeguards concerning generative AI.
Under the terms of the latest agreement, both companies will collaborate to identify and remove unauthorized AI-generated music from the platform. They also committed to improving artist and songwriter attribution systems, ensuring that revenues and recognition appropriately flow to human creators. This commitment underscores a shared goal to protect the integrity of musical artistry amidst the rise of AI tools.
Beyond AI protections, the agreement expands opportunities for UMG artists and songwriters on TikTok. It includes enhanced marketing and advertising campaigns, e-commerce integrations, and artist-focused features designed to boost discovery and monetization. These initiatives aim to strengthen the connection between artists and their global audiences through TikTok's influential platform.
According to a TechCrunch report, the renewed deal represents a notable shift, with UMG consistently pushing platforms to implement stricter content moderation policies. Michael Nash, Executive Vice President and Chief Digital Officer of Universal Music Group, stated, "We're proud of the pioneering work we've done with TikTok to create wide-ranging benefits for our artists and songwriters." The agreement reflects a growing industry-wide effort to establish clear frameworks for AI content.
