A country most people associate with K-pop and Samsung phones… just walked into a NATO summit and asked for a seat at the arms table.
Not to buy weapons.

South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung stood up at NATO's Defence Industry Forum in Ankara and made a pitch that quietly reshapes the global weapons map.
He called it "South Korea-NATO defence industry partnership 2.0."
Sounds bureaucratic.
It isn't.
This isn't South Korea asking NATO for favours.
It's South Korea saying: we bring something you don't have enough of.
Lee's own words cut straight to it:
"If South Korea's stable capability of production and verified technologies partner with NATO's longtime know-hows, the defence capabilities of both sides will be significantly enhanced."
Translation: you have the deep tech. We have the factories that actually deliver on time.
NATO members have spent years struggling with something embarrassing.
Ammunition shortages.
Production lines that can't scale fast enough for modern war demand.
South Korea, meanwhile, has spent decades building exactly that muscle — thanks to living next door to a hostile neighbour for 70+ years.
Necessity built a defence machine most countries only dream of.
So when Seoul offers "production partnership," NATO isn't hearing charity.
It's hearing capacity.
This isn't a one-off diplomatic photo op.
South Korea has already been quietly arming parts of Europe — tanks, howitzers, fighter jets — through bilateral deals.
Now it wants that relationship formalised, upgraded, institutionalised.
Not arms sales.
Arms partnership.
Joint R&D. Joint production. Joint operation of weapons systems.
That's a different level of trust entirely.
For decades, the global defence order had a simple script: the West designs, everyone else buys.
South Korea just proposed rewriting that script.
Not by competing with NATO.
By becoming impossible for NATO to build without.
