Altus Schools — a network that helps students recover credits and get back on track to graduation — is calling itself the first in the world to test physical AI as a teaching partner.
The robots run on ChatGPT under the hood.
And they don't just stand there. Ameca can shape-shift into four different personas:

That's the number that's making people squirm.
Ameca isn't cheap to begin with — full deployments from maker Engineered Arts reportedly run $500K+, with half-body versions starting around $100K.
Altus says it's innovative research. Critics say it's an expensive experiment on real kids.
👉 Wayne Holmes, a professor at University College London who studies AI in education, didn't mince words:
There is no independent evidence at scale that these tools are effective, safe, or have a positive impact in classrooms.
In fact, he says, the evidence is starting to point the other way.
Even OpenAI itself hasn't fully cracked the problem of making chatbots safe for kids.
Across the country, the Salamanca City Central School District on the Seneca Nation Reservation in New York is piloting Optio — an AI teaching assistant from Realbotix Corp.
