Imagine studying for two years… acing your revaluation… and still losing your dream college seat.
That's the nightmare unfolding right now for CBSE students in Karnataka.
A 17-year-old from west Bengaluru scored 569/600 in Class 12.
Good enough for a KCET rank around 2,200.
Then his revaluation came in.
New marks: 575.
New rank should have been: around 1,600.
His actual rank on the counselling portal?
👉 Unchanged.
Another student from south Bengaluru saw his marks jump from 418 to 435 after revaluation.
A bump that could've pushed his rank up by 2,000+ spots.
Meaning better colleges. Better branches. A different future.
He's been walking into the Karnataka Examinations Authority office since June 24.
First they said: submit both marksheets, we'll consider it.
Then: we might not consider it.
Then finally: we will not consider it.
KCET ranks aren't just about the entrance test.
It's a 50:50 formula:
So every extra board mark literally moves you up the ladder.
This whole storm traces back to CBSE's new On-Screen Marking system rolled out in 2026.
Answer sheet mix-ups. Wrong totals. Uncounted pages.
The backlash was so intense that over 1.6 lakh students applied for revaluation — a staggering number.
CBSE eventually revised results in phases in late June.
But by then… KCET counselling had already begun on June 20.
Executive Director H Prasanna was blunt:
Updating ranks post-revaluation is not permitted once counselling is underway.
One student did get a fresh rank after submitting a new marksheet.
When asked about that, Prasanna said he'd look into it.
Cue the confusion. Cue the anger.
A student put it best:
First CBSE messes up. Then KEA refuses to fix it. Where do we go?
Parents are now considering court.
And somewhere in Bengaluru, a 17-year-old is staring at a rank that no longer matches his marks — deciding a future built on someone else's error.
The system revised the marks.
It just forgot to revise the lives attached to them.
