A quiet circular out of Karnataka just kicked off a full-blown language war — and this time, the opponent isn't another language.
It's AI.
Starting the 2026-27 academic year, 1,652 government high schools in Karnataka are dropping their third language subject.
In its place?
Artificial Intelligence.
Here's the scale of the rollout:

📚 381 schools already running NSQF skill programs
💇 81 schools swapping beauty & wellness, retail, and apparel training for AI instead
One 'AI guest teacher' per school. That's the entire staffing plan for now.
This isn't a random experiment.
Karnataka has spent much of 2026 resisting the Centre's three-language formula — wary it's Hindi imposition dressed up as policy.
The state already backs a two-language model for its own schools.
So when the NEP's employability push collided with that resistance…
AI slid right into the gap where the third language used to sit.
The Karnataka High School Hindi Language Teachers' Association fired off a letter straight to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
Their demand: withdraw the order, immediately.
"This will plunge our future into darkness," warned association president D. Manjunath.
His counter-pitch isn't AI versus language.
It's AI and language — taught side by side, not swapped out.
Meanwhile, the third-language teachers displaced by the switch are being quietly reassigned to nearby schools facing staff shortages.
Is Karnataka future-proofing a generation of students for an AI-first economy...
Or trading away language education for a subject with just one guest teacher per school to run it.
Either way, a subject taught for generations is about to make room for one that didn't exist a decade ago.
