Summer break is almost over.

In Ludhiana, the bell rings again on July 1.

But before a single student walks back in… schools have a checklist to clear. πŸ“‹

And it's not about textbooks or timetables.

It's about something far more basic.

Can kids eat, drink and sit safely on day one?

🍲 The kitchen gets the first scrub

The district education department has fired off a clear directive.

Every government school must run a full cleanliness and safety drive β€” before the gates swing open.

Top of the list: the mid-day meal kitchen.

The cook-cum-helper does the work. The MDM in-charge signs off. No shortcuts.

Here's what must be ticked off:

  • 🧼 Kitchens and store rooms sanitised
  • πŸ₯˜ Every cooking and serving utensil cleaned at least a day before reopening
  • 🌾 Food grains inspected β€” fit for consumption, no compromises
  • β˜€οΈ Wheat properly sun-dried before being sent for grinding
  • πŸ’§ Water tanks scrubbed clean for cooking and drinking

πŸ”₯ Then come the safety checks

Because hygiene alone isn't enough.

Schools have been told to:

  • 🧯 Inspect every fire extinguisher on the premises β€” and make sure it actually works
  • πŸ”₯ Check LPG cylinders and gas connections before relighting the stoves after weeks of disuse
  • πŸ§ͺ Get the drinking water lab-tested after reopening and submit the report to the education office

That last one is the real tell.

It's not enough to say the water is clean. You have to prove it. On paper. πŸ“„

🧠 Why this matters more than it sounds

The Mid-Day Meal Scheme has been running in Ludhiana since October 2001.

For lakhs of kids across India, that one hot meal isn't just lunch.

It's the reason they show up.

It's protein. It's attendance. It's dignity.

And one careless reopening β€” a rusted cylinder, a contaminated tank, mouldy grain β€” can turn a school day into a hospital visit.

That's the quiet weight behind a routine circular.

⚑ The bigger picture

Dharamjeet Singh Dhillon of the Lecturer Cadre union called it what it is β€” a routine exercise before every reopening.

Routine. But not optional.

Kitchen hygiene. Food quality. Water supply. Fire safety. Gas lines.

Five boxes. One deadline. Zero excuses.

Because come Wednesday morning, the only thing kids should worry about…

is whether they remembered their homework.

Not what's in their plate.

That's all for now!
