Delhi LG Lt Gen Taranjit Singh Sandhu walked into Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak with a sharp message.
Stop chasing rankings. Start solving Delhi-NCR.
And suddenly, a state university 70 km from Delhi was being handed a much bigger job description.
Delhi-NCR isn't just a geography. It's a stress test.
Sandhu's pitch: this is exactly the problem set a university like MDU should be obsessed with.
Not abstract papers. Not citation farming.
Real problems. Real region. Real research.
He didn't say "do more research."
He named the lanes:
And one underrated lever: industry collaboration.
Because a lab paper that never leaves the lab is just expensive paper.
Here's the part that stings.
MDU recently slipped 11 spots in NIRF rankings, reportedly hit by a staff crunch.
Its pharmaceutical sciences department punches hard (38th nationally), but the overall university is drifting in the 101–150 band.
So when the LG says "global networking and meaningful research will define your future identity" —
he's not flattering anyone.
He's drawing a line.
For decades, Indian universities optimised for:
📚 Syllabus completion.
🏅 Ranking optics.
🧾 Placement brochures.
Sandhu is asking for a different scoreboard.
👉 Did your research clean a river?
👉 Did it help a 75-year-old live better?
👉 Did it lower a single AQI number in Rohtak or Rohini?
That's the new flex.
VC Prof. Milap Punia said MDU is already expanding problem-oriented research in biosciences and pharma, with a fresh roadmap in the works.
Good. Because the NCR isn't waiting.
The universities that matter in the next decade won't be the ones with the prettiest campuses.
They'll be the ones their cities can't live without.
