Educational visionary Michael Strong, with over three decades dedicated to Socratic pedagogy, continues to shape the learning landscape through his latest venture, The Socratic Experience. This K-12 virtual school emphasizes dialogue-based learning, one-on-one mentorship, and entrepreneurial projects, building on Strong's lifelong commitment to fostering critical thinking and intellectual autonomy. His journey began with early philosophical discussions in high school, which profoundly influenced his educational path.

Strong's personal educational philosophy was forged early, as he recounted his high school experience: > "In my junior year of high school, I had a teacher who would simply read and discuss philosophy with us. Plato, Nietzsche, Buber. I loved it. You've seen those films; you go from black-and-white to color. For me, it was, wow, I get to think about ideas, and I'd never had that experience before." This transformative period led him to St. John's College, known for its Great Books curriculum and Socratic discussions, after a year at Harvard, stating, "I don't like even famous people talking at me. I love dialogue."

After graduating from St. John's and pursuing graduate studies at the University of Chicago, Strong's passion for Socratic methods expanded into public education. In the 1980s, he began visiting classrooms for Mortimer Adler's Paideia program, observing how children "would come alive" when asked questions. This led to a full-time role as a Socratic teacher trainer in Alaska, and subsequently, to parents requesting he establish a school rooted in this interactive teaching style.

Over the years, Strong has founded or significantly influenced numerous innovative educational institutions. These include Moreno Valley High School, which was ranked among the top public high schools in the U.S., and The Academy of Thought and Industry, the high school model for a major Montessori network. His work consistently aimed to cultivate environments where students engaged deeply with ideas, rather than passively receiving information.

The Socratic Experience, his current virtual school for grades 3-12, reflects the culmination of his extensive experience. It offers a high-touch learning environment with synchronous classes focused on Socratic dialogue, writing workshops, and adaptive STEM programs. Students also dedicate afternoons to self-directed projects, supported by weekly one-on-one coaching, with annual tuition ranging from $12,600 to $14,400. This model positions The Socratic Experience as a pioneer in the intentional education movement, alongside other Austin-based innovators.
