But when it came to picking engineering… she still hesitated.
That one sentence sums up India's biggest education paradox in 2026.
Because the numbers just dropped.
And they're wild.
For the seventh year in a row, women are outnumbering men in Indian higher education.
The Gender Parity Index? 1.08.
Translation: for every 100 eligible men enrolling, 108 women are showing up.
Female GER: 31.2%
Male GER: 28.9%
Not a blip. Not a one-off.
A seven-year streak.
STEM enrolment just crossed 1 crore students for the first time.
Inside that number, something bigger happened.
Women now make up 54.6% of all science students.
At the postgraduate level, that jumps to 61.4%.
Let that sink in.
Science — long seen as a male stronghold — just quietly became a women's space.

But they're still missing from the classrooms that code it.
A few numbers that don't make headlines but should:
📈 Female enrolment: up 42.2% since 2014-15
🏛️ Women-only universities: 18 now, up from just 11
⚖️ GPI for SC women: 1.11 — outpacing SC men too
🎓 ST women: GPI of 1.08
This isn't just an urban, elite story. It's showing up across caste lines too.
Access is no longer the battle.
Women are walking through the door in record numbers.
The next battle is which rooms they walk into once inside.
Because getting a seat in college was never really the finish line.
It was just the starting gun.
