India's power grid is about to get a new customer.

One that guzzles electricity like there's no tomorrow…

The Ministry of Power just told Parliament something that should make every grid engineer in the country sit up.

AI data centres will add 26.3 GW of load to India's grid by 2031-32.

That's almost double the government's own estimate from March this year — back then, the number was 13.56 GW.

In just four months, the projection doubled.

  • ⚡ Electricity demand from data centres could grow 20-fold by 2040

By then, data centres alone could eat up 7% of India's total electricity demand.

Behind this is a digital economy worth ₹32 trillion, over a billion internet users, and 22 billion UPI transactions every single month.


⚠️ The part nobody talks about: AI loads don't behave

Here's where it gets interesting.

Unlike a factory or a housing colony, AI data centres don't draw power steadily.

They spike. Hard. Then drop. Just as hard.

Grid India's own chairman, Samir Chandra Saxena, put it bluntly at a summit earlier this year:

"It is variable, it is spiky, it has sharp ramps."

And then the truly unsettling bit.

When something goes wrong on the grid, these data centres don't wait around to help stabilize it.

👉 They silently isolate themselves and exit.

A sudden withdrawal of 1-2 GW, just walking out of the system, could send shockwaves through India's power grid.


🌱 So what's the fix?

Policymakers are now debating something unusual — where to physically put these data centres.

Most currently cluster near IT hubs like Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi-NCR.

Pile more load there, and you get transmission congestion.

The emerging idea: push new data centres closer to renewable energy sources instead.

Less congestion. Greener power. Smarter grid math.

The government has confirmed this incoming 26.3 GW load will primarily be served by renewable capacity.

India isn't just building AI models.

It's quietly rewiring its entire electricity grid to feed them.

And the real challenge was never the algorithms.
