The cutest names in Indian energy… now sitting unwanted on dealership shelves.
These are the tiny 5kg LPG cylinders — the ones students, migrant workers and street vendors buy off the shelf with just an Aadhaar card.
No subsidy. No paperwork. No fuss.
And suddenly… no takers.
In March, one 5kg cylinder in Delhi cost ₹323.
By June? ₹821.50.
More than doubled in 90 days. ⚡
Distributors across the country are now reporting the same thing:
Rewind to March 2026.
The Strait of Hormuz — the artery that carries roughly 90% of India's imported LPG — gets choked by the West Asia war.
India imports about 60% of its cooking gas. Cargoes stopped arriving. Commercial LPG supply was halted.
To rescue migrant workers left stranded without a kitchen flame, the government pushed the little 5kg FTL cylinders hard.
Between 23 March and 22 April, 2 million of them flew off the shelves.
For a moment, Chhotu was the hero of the crisis.
Here's the twist nobody planned for.
The FTL cylinder is classified as commercial LPG — zero subsidy.
So when prices spiked, the tiny "poor man's cylinder" became more expensive per kg than the big 19kg commercial one restaurants use.
The convenience cylinder for migrants became a luxury they couldn't afford.
With kitchens cold, jobs gone and rent still due… migrants boarded trains home.
Kerala saw a reverse migration wave. Ludhiana emptied out.
Today around 85–90% of Ludhiana's industrial workforce is back — but many are still buying black-market refills at ₹3,500–₹4,000 per 19kg cylinder.
As one UP distributor federation chief put it bluntly:
"The whole objective of promoting FTL cylinders is defeated."
A crisis product is only useful if it stays affordable.
The cylinder built to save the migrant worker… ended up pricing him out.
And India just learned, the hard way, that energy security isn't only about barrels and pipelines.
It's about whether Chhotu still fits in a daily-wage budget.
