E25 petrol rollout requires extensive testing and stakeholder consultation, says Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri

Your bike runs on it.

Your car runs on it.

You probably didn't even notice.

That's E20 petrol — 20% ethanol, 80% petrol — and it's already in the tank of almost every vehicle in India.

Now the government is being asked the obvious next question:

Why not push further? Why not E25?

And the Petroleum Minister's answer is basically:

Not so fast.

⛽ The numbers nobody's talking about

Hardeep Singh Puri didn't hedge on defending E20.

He came with receipts.

  • 🏍️ 20 crore two-wheelers running on E20
  • 🚗 20 lakh four-wheelers doing the same
  • 🔧 Manufacturers and mechanics reporting zero issues
  • 📅 Rollout underway since April 2025 — over a year now

"Why this sudden interest?" he asked.

Fair question.

India's been quietly blending ethanol since long before this became a talking point.

🧪 So why the brakes on E25?

Here's the twist.

More ethanol sounds like a bigger win — less imported crude, more homegrown biofuel from sugarcane and rice.

But Puri isn't rushing it.

"I neither manufacture the cars nor the fuel," he said.

Translation: this isn't a political call. It's an engineering one.

Before E25 hits a single pump, the government wants:

  • 🔬 Completed scientific testing
  • 🏭 Sign-off from automobile manufacturers
  • 🤝 Full stakeholder consultation

No shortcuts. No timeline pressure.

🚧 And E85? Barely out of the gate

While E25 waits on lab results, E85 — 85% ethanol — has just begun rolling out.

But it needs something E20 never did: brand new petrol pumps and fresh infrastructure built from scratch.

That's not a policy tweak. That's a construction project.

⚔️ The other front of this battle

This wasn't just Puri talking.

The same day, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari went further — calling criticism of E20 a "paid campaign" and daring critics to name one vehicle damaged by it.

Two ministers. Same message. Same day.

That's not a coincidence.

That's a government closing ranks around its biggest energy bet in years.

Because ethanol isn't just about your fuel tank.

It's about how much crude oil India doesn't have to import.

That's all for now!
