A small Finnish town just buried its energy problem — literally — under 2,000 tons of crushed rock.

Meet the world's largest sand battery.

Well, technically it's soapstone.

But "sand battery" sounds cooler, so let's go with it.

It's 13 meters tall, 15 meters wide, and it just quietly solved one of renewable energy's oldest headaches.

Solar and wind are cheap, clean… and unreliable.

Sun sets. Wind stops.

Demand doesn't.

For years, the fix has been lithium-ion batteries.

Great for short bursts. Terrible for weeks-long storage. And built on rare earth materials the whole world is now fighting over.

Pornainen, a town of 5,000 people, needed a different answer.

Think of it as a giant thermos.

  • ⚡ Grab electricity when it's cheap — usually when wind or solar is flooding the grid
  • 🌡️ Heat the soapstone up to blistering temperatures
  • 🏠 Trap that heat for days, even weeks, in a heavily insulated silo
  • 💧 Release it through heat exchangers to warm water for the town's heating network

No combustion. No rare earths. Just really, really hot rocks.

One charge covers Pornainen for roughly one month in summer and one week in winter.


📉 The numbers that actually matter

  • 🌍 Greenhouse gas emissions from the local heating network down ~70%
  • 🪵 Wood-chip use cut by ~60%
  • 🛢️ Oil heating — completely phased out
  • 🔋 This system alone is 10x bigger than Polar Night Energy's first sand battery back in 2022

CEO Tommi Eronen put it simply: the world is shifting from big power plants to solar and wind, and that shift demands massive storage — ideally without mining more rare earth metals.


🚀 This isn't staying in Finland

Polar Night Energy says teams from every continent have already reached out — many from communities still stuck burning coal and oil.

The company just picked up a Breakthrough Award in 2026 for the tech.

And it's not slowing down.

A new project — over double the size at 250 megawatt-hours — is already in the works for a district heating provider in Vääksy.

Next frontier? Turning that stored heat back into electricity, not just warmth.


If it works at scale, the boring answer to a global energy crisis might just be sand.
