Form Energy scanned 500 possible sites across 16 states.
It picked a 55-acre plot in Weirton — a town whose entire identity was built on steel.

Ground broke in May 2023, with Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Senators Manchin and Capito on site.
Fast forward to now.
The plant is already producing — and commercial shipments are on track for early 2027.
By 2028, Form Energy wants 500 megawatts a year of these batteries rolling out the door.
And the batteries already have somewhere to go.
Xcel Energy is installing these systems at former coal plant sites — old fossil-fuel ground, now hosting rust-powered clean energy.
Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures backed the deal with a $20 million grant.
Form Energy has also teamed up with GE Vernova, chasing a fresh wave of demand — powering the always-on grids that AI data centers now desperately need.
Total funding raised so far: nearly $800 million.
This isn't a lab experiment anymore.
It's a factory, a workforce, and a bet that the cheapest material on Earth might quietly solve one of clean energy's hardest problems.
