France just switched off three nuclear reactors in the middle of a heatwave.

Not because they broke.

Because the rivers next to them got too hot to touch.

Sounds backwards, right?

A nuclear reactor running at thousands of degrees… stopped by warm water.

🌑️ The kettle that needs a river

A reactor is basically a giant kettle.

Fission boils water into steam.

Steam spins a turbine.

Then that steam has to turn back into water β€” fast.

That's where the river comes in.

Cool river water flows through the condenser, soaks up the heat, and goes back to the river a little warmer.

At Golfech, on the Garonne, French law caps that returned water at 28Β°C.

This week, the river was already flirting with the limit β€” before the plant added anything.

Warm water holds less oxygen β€” right when fish need more of it.

The limit isn't red tape. It's the river's lifeline.

The grid needs power most exactly when the heat is worst.

And the very fleet built to supply that power keeps getting benched by the same heat driving demand.

Zoom out, though, and it's a small dent.

EDF says heat-driven losses have averaged just 0.3% of annual nuclear output since 2000.

EDF has committed €8.7 billion over 15 years to fix this for good.
