
India just opened applications for a factory it desperately needs — and doesn't yet have.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries has floated a fresh scheme inviting companies, Indian and global, to build giga-scale battery cell plants for grid storage.
The catch?
Most of India's battery cells today don't come from India.
They come from China.
👉 Nearly 85% of India's lithium-ion battery imports trace back to China.
👉 India has 60 GWh of pack-assembly capacity… but barely 1 GWh of actual cell manufacturing.
👉 Landed battery cell costs jumped from $42/kWh to $55/kWh after China pulled export incentives.
That's not a supply chain. That's a dependency.
Under the new RFP, selected firms get government subsidies — but only if they deliver.
No milestones, no money.
Companies can build everything in-house, or run a "hub-and-spoke" model where different Indian manufacturers make different parts of the battery.
India's grid-scale battery storage is about to explode.
From under 200 MWh installed in 2025…
to a projected 5 GWh by the end of this year.
That's nearly a 10x jump in twelve months.
Meanwhile, ACC battery demand overall is expected to rocket from 28 GWh today to roughly 272 GWh by 2030.

If India keeps importing at this pace, every rupee of that renewable energy boom quietly flows back out to Beijing.
States get pulled in too — land, tax breaks, infrastructure, all stitched into tripartite agreements with the Centre.
This isn't just an industrial policy.
It's India trying to own the thing that will decide whether its clean energy future is actually its own.
Because solar panels and wind turbines mean nothing at night…
