Japan just did something no country has ever done at commercial scale — it planted eight giant wind turbines that literally float on the open ocean off Nagasaki.

And that's just the warm-up act.

Tokyo is now plotting a floating wind farm 10x bigger near the Izu Islands. 🌊

Here's the problem Japan has always faced.

It's an island nation swimming in wind.

But its coastline drops off a cliff — deep water starts just a few kilometres from shore.

You can't bolt turbines to a seabed that's 300 metres down.

So Japan stopped trying.


⚡ The workaround: turbines that float

On January 5, 2026, the Goto Floating Wind Farm switched on off Fukue Island.

🚀 Now for the wild part

Goto was the proof of concept.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is now planning a 1 gigawatt floating wind farm near five Izu Islands — Oshima, Niijima, Kozushima, Miyake and Hachijo.

That's roughly 10 times bigger than the largest floating wind farm on Earth today (in Norway).

One gigawatt = the equivalent of a nuclear plant. Floating. In the open ocean.

👉 Enough to power 850,000 households.

Seabed surveys start April 2026. Target commissioning: 2035.


🧠 Why this is a much bigger deal than it sounds

Japan's total offshore wind potential?

~9,000 terawatt-hours a year.

That's nine times the country's projected electricity demand by 2050.

Most of it locked in deep water — reachable only by floating tech.

The national goal:

  • 📈 10 GW offshore wind by 2030
  • 📈 45 GW by 2040
  • 🌀 15 GW of that from floating turbines alone

⚔️ But the road is rough

The Izu zone is still classified as a preparation zone — the earliest stage.

Analysts are skeptical that 2035 is realistic.

💸 A weaker yen and soaring material costs have already spooked private investors — one major Japanese company recently walked away from a big wind project.

Offshore wind is slow. Expensive. Long payback.


🎯 The real story

Japan is trying to flip its geography on its head.

What looked like a curse — deep, drop-off coasts — is being reframed as its biggest clean energy asset.

Every floating megawatt is one less barrel of imported fuel.
