
Japan just pulled rare-earth mud from 6,000 metres beneath the Pacific Ocean — and it might be the country's biggest move yet to break China's grip on the minerals that power everything from smartphones to missiles.
Off a tiny, uninhabited island called Minami Torishima, a drilling ship named Chikyū spent over a month scraping the seafloor.
It came back with 50 tonnes of muck.
Inside that muck? Traces of yttrium, gadolinium, and dysprosium — rare earths so critical they show up in semiconductor coatings, exhaust catalysts, and EV motors.
PM Sanae Takaichi called it exactly what it is: leverage.
"So as not to overly depend on specific countries," she said.
She didn't have to name the country.

Scientists estimate the seabed around Minami Torishima could hold over 16 million tonnes of rare earths.
That would make it one of the largest deposits on Earth — enough, some studies suggest, to secure supply for centuries.
Not decades.
Centuries.
So Japan's next move is bigger than a sample run.

Mining at 6 kilometres deep is absurdly hard — and expensive.
Environmental groups are already warning about the damage deep-sea extraction could do to fragile marine ecosystems nobody's ever touched.
Still, the message is clear.
Countries aren't just racing for AI chips anymore.
They're racing for the dirt those chips are made from.
And Japan just proved the ocean floor might be the next battlefield.
