Mapping will strengthen power services and speed up fault detection, says TGSPDCL Chairman Jitesh Patil

Picture this.

A transformer blows in some lane of Hyderabad.

Lights out. Fans dead. WhatsApp groups on fire.

You call 1912.

The person on the other endโ€ฆ guesses.

Which substation? Which feeder? Which transformer feeds your house?

Nobody really knows.

That era ends today.

โšก Telangana just hit "map everything"

On July 1, 2026, TGSPDCL โ€” the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company โ€” flagged off a digital mapping drive that quietly might be one of the biggest infra upgrades the state has seen in years.

The man pressing the button: Jitesh V. Patil, IAS, who took charge as CMD back in February.

His pitch is simple.

If we can't see the network, we can't fix it fast.

๐Ÿง  What's actually being mapped

Every single wire. Every single pole. Every single consumer.

From the giant 132/33 kV EHT substations all the way down to the meter buzzing inside your kitchen.

The chain looks like this:

  • ๐Ÿญ EHT substations (132/33 kV)
  • ๐Ÿ”Œ Step-down substations (33/11 kV)
  • ๐Ÿชข 11 kV feeders
  • โš™๏ธ Distribution transformers (DTRs)
  • ๐Ÿ  Your individual service connection

Field engineers will verify DTR codes feeder by feeder on the ground.

Meter readers, during the July billing cycle, will tag every consumer to the right transformer.

No guesswork. No "sir, we'll check and call back."

๐Ÿš€ Why this is a big deal for you

Right now, an outage complaint is basically a treasure hunt.

After mapping? The system instantly knows exactly which transformer, which feeder, which substation just tripped.

That means:

  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Faster fault localisation via the 1912 call centre, app, WhatsApp or web portal
  • โฑ๏ธ Shorter restoration times
  • ๐ŸชŸ Transparent updates on why the power's out and when it's coming back

No more vague "line problem, sir."

๐ŸŒŠ The real prize is hidden underneath

This isn't just a customer-service fix.

It's the foundation layer for everything modern grids are supposed to do.

Once the map is live, TGSPDCL unlocks:

  • ๐Ÿงฌ Smart grid integration
  • ๐Ÿค– AI-driven outage management
  • ๐Ÿ”ฎ Predictive maintenance โ€” fixing transformers before they fail
  • ๐Ÿ“Š Scientific load planning instead of gut feel

The first phase rolls out inside the Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) limits โ€” Hyderabad's dense urban belt.

๐ŸŽฏ The bigger shift

For decades, Indian discoms ran on paper registers, tribal knowledge and the memory of one veteran lineman who just knew.

That's a fragile way to power a megacity.

Telangana is finally swapping memory for data.

And when the lights go out next timeโ€ฆ

the grid will know before you do.

That's all for now!
