
A river just switched off half a country's electricity.
Hungary's Paks nuclear plant — the one powering nearly 50% of the nation — is heading for its first-ever full shutdown in 44 years.
The reason isn't a meltdown. Isn't sabotage. Isn't even mechanical failure.
It's water. Or the lack of it.
Paks sits on the banks of the Danube, 90km south of Budapest.
It pulls river water in to cool its four Soviet-built reactors.
Simple system. Worked for four decades.
But Central Europe's drought has pushed the Danube to levels nobody's ever seen.
Prime Minister Péter Magyar says the river could sink to negative 144 centimetres — smashing the old record of negative 98cm set back in 2018.
Below negative 134cm, the pumps simply can't feed the reactors anymore.
That's not a warning. That's a hard stop.
And here's the twist — Magyar says the Danube has only risen in August three times in the last 20 years.
So there's no rain-shaped rescue coming.
The government isn't waiting around.
Every watt is being hunted down.
This isn't really a nuclear story.
It's a climate story wearing a nuclear plant's clothes.

Turns out even atoms need water to stay cool.

Officials insist the shutdown is safe, orderly, no risk to the public.
But the optics are impossible to ignore.
A country losing half its power supply because a river got too thin to do its job.
That's the drought economy arriving at the door of critical infrastructure.
