
A power line fell outside Washington, DC — and 3.49 gigawatts of AI data centers vanished from the grid in seconds.
Lights flickered from Virginia to Chicago.
No blackout happened.
This time.
Here's the part that should worry you.
It happened in Ashburn, Virginia — the world's largest cluster of data centers, nicknamed "Data Center Alley."
One power line failed.
Normally, the grid shrugs that off in seconds.
Instead:
The disconnected load was only 3% of PJM's total demand at the time.
Three percent broke the rhythm of the largest grid in America.
When voltage dips even slightly, AI data centers don't wait around.
Their safety systems react in split seconds — and they all reacted the same split second.
"It's the canary in the coal mine," says Ricardo de Azevedo, CTO of ON.Energy.
These synchronized disconnects are "happening more and more," he warns.
This isn't the first time either.
Back in 2024, a similar event on the same grid pulled 1.5 GW offline.
This one was more than double that.
Picture dozens of data centers, sitting side by side, each independently deciding: disconnect now.
None of them coordinate.
None of them know what the others are doing.
Ali Zain Banatwala of the Independent Electricity System Operator put it simply:
"We need to figure a way for these loads... to sequentially either disconnect or reconnect."
Right now, it's chaos by a thousand simultaneous decisions.
ON.Energy is testing a different approach — wrapping entire data center campuses in giant battery banks.
To the grid, the facility looks like one smooth, well-behaved customer.
Not a cliff-edge of demand that vanishes overnight.
The company is already installing 3 GW of this system across four campuses.
Grid operators are catching on too — ERCOT in Texas will soon require large loads to "ride through" disturbances instead of bailing.
Data centers were 6% of PJM's load in 2024.
They're 3% today, in a grid that's grown.
By 2040, they're projected to hit 24%.
One fallen power line just showed what 3% can do.
Nobody's ready to find out what 24% looks like.
