A prominent advocacy group, the Abundance Institute, in collaboration with the Beacon Center of Tennessee, is championing a significant expansion of nuclear power in the state to address escalating energy demands and drive down overall costs. The initiative emphasizes building upon Tennessee's existing nuclear infrastructure and streamlining regulatory processes.

"The issue is no longer about winning the argument on nuclear, but clearing the way for the quiet nuclear workhorse that has powered Tennessee all along, and building more of it," stated the Abundance Institute in a recent social media post. The organization added, "Abundant, affordable energy is how the cost of everything else finally comes down."

Tennessee currently relies on nuclear power for approximately 40% of its electricity, primarily from the Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) Sequoyah and Watts Bar plants. The state is experiencing unprecedented energy demand fueled by rapid population growth and the influx of energy-intensive industries, including advanced manufacturing and large data centers for artificial intelligence. This surge necessitates a robust and reliable energy supply.

Taylor Barkley, Director of Public Policy at the Abundance Institute and a Senior Fellow at the Beacon Center of Tennessee, is a key voice in this movement. Both organizations advocate for critical reforms to U.S. nuclear regulation, proposing replacements for outdated standards like "as low as reasonably achievable" (ALARA) and linear no-threshold (LNT) modeling with risk-informed, performance-based frameworks. They argue that these changes are essential to reduce construction timelines and costs, making nuclear power more competitive and scalable.

The TVA is actively pursuing advanced nuclear technologies, including plans for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) at its Clinch River Site. The utility has announced a program to deploy up to 6 gigawatts (GW) of new SMR capacity and has partnered with companies like Kairos Power to supply electricity for Google data centers. These projects, supported by state and federal funding, position Tennessee as a leading hub for nuclear innovation and development.

This push for nuclear expansion aims to leverage Tennessee's historical expertise in nuclear technology, particularly around the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Proponents believe that by embracing new nuclear generation, the state can ensure long-term energy security, attract further economic investment, and ultimately provide more affordable power to its residents and businesses, thereby reducing costs across various sectors.
