
India just sold 2.3 million electric vehicles in 2025.
Back in 2016, that number was 50,000.
That's not growth. That's a takeover.
And yet, here's the twist nobody saw coming:
India's official energy data has no idea how much power these EVs are actually pulling from the grid.
Not a rough estimate.
Not a ministry footnote.
Nothing.
A government-appointed expert panel, chaired by IIT Delhi director Rangan Banerjee, just dropped a report saying: enough is enough.
Track EV electricity demand. Properly. Nationally.
Because right now, India is planning its energy future on incomplete math.
Think about that for a second.
EVs aren't the only blind spot.
The panel found cracks all over India's energy statistics:
⛽ Diesel sales are misfiled under "retailers and resellers" instead of the sectors actually burning the fuel
🌱 Biofuels and off-grid renewable power? Barely counted
✈️ International flights and ships fuelling up in India? Left out of the books
⚫ Imported coal — 20% of India's total consumption — has almost no sector-wise tracking of where it's actually used
Each gap sounds small.
Together, they blur the entire picture of how India actually consumes energy.
India has a Net Zero target.
India has aggressive renewable energy goals.
👉 But you cannot manage what you don't measure.
If policymakers don't know how much load EVs add to the grid, they can't plan charging infrastructure, power capacity, or state-wise electricity supply properly.
If they can't trace where imported coal is burned, they can't target emissions where it counts.
It's the unglamorous, unsexy part of the energy transition.
But it's the part that decides whether the transition actually works.
India's EV boom made headlines.
Its data boom didn't.
But this quiet statistical overhaul might end up shaping India's energy future more than any single EV subsidy ever could.
You can't build tomorrow's grid on yesterday's spreadsheet.
