Valar Atomics, the nuclear energy startup founded by Isaiah P. Taylor, is reportedly in discussions to raise new capital at a valuation of $6 billion, signaling strong investor confidence in its mission to revolutionize global energy production. The company, which aims to make nuclear energy significantly cheaper and more accessible through mass-produced small modular reactors (SMRs), has rapidly advanced its technology and business model since its founding in 2023. This potential funding round follows a $19 million seed round in March 2025 and a reported $150 million raised for its "gigasites" concept.
Taylor, a high school dropout who became a coder before founding Valar Atomics, articulated the company's core philosophy, stating, "Make energy cheaper, and demand shows up." He elaborated on this perspective during an appearance on the "No Priors" podcast, emphasizing his belief that "energy is the only truly scarce resource in the universe, and why they’re betting on it." This vision drives Valar Atomics' strategy to deliver abundant, clean power.
The El Segundo-based company is developing passively safe, high-temperature gas reactors (HTGRs) designed for standardized mass manufacturing. Valar Atomics plans to deploy these reactors in "gigasites," which are energy campuses capable of producing gigawatts of power. This model allows the company to bypass traditional grid constraints, directly supplying high-demand customers such as data centers, heavy industrial facilities, and hydrogen production plants.
In a significant development, Valar Atomics recently announced that it generated electricity from a nuclear reactor powering an NVIDIA system, marking a first for a next-generation reactor startup. The company has also built a 100,000-pound prototype reactor within a year. Valar Atomics is pioneering a process to create carbon-neutral synthetic fuels, including jet fuel and gasoline, by splitting water into hydrogen and combining it with captured CO2 using the heat from its reactors.
The startup's rapid progress comes amidst growing bipartisan support for nuclear energy and a loosening of regulatory requirements for advanced reactor projects. Valar Atomics has also engaged in international partnerships, such as with the Philippines' Nuclear Research Institute, and is collaborating with Utah to build a pilot advanced reactor. Despite some industry skepticism regarding SMR costs and waste, Valar Atomics contends its gigasite model and use of TRISO fuel address these concerns, aiming for both speed and safety in its deployment.
