Bollywood actress Ananya Panday is facing significant backlash following a Bharatanatyam-inspired dance sequence in her latest film, "Chand Mera Dil," which premiered on May 22, 2026. The performance, intended as a fusion of classical Indian dance and contemporary styles, has been widely criticized across social media platforms and by classical dancers for allegedly disrespecting the ancient art form. The controversy erupted shortly after the film's release, with clips of the dance going viral and sparking intense debate.

The criticism highlights a perceived lack of technique, grace, and understanding of Bharatanatyam. Archana Pawar, a Kathak dancer, expressed her dismay on social media, stating, > "As a Kathak dancer myself, it genuinely hurts to watch such a mockery of divine Bharatanatyam… Classical dance deserves respect & dignity!" This sentiment was echoed by numerous others who felt the performance trivialized the discipline required for classical arts.

Acclaimed dancer Anita R. Ratnam commented, "Watching this clip felt like Bharatanatyam being held hostage by a catastrophic misunderstanding of the form." She further elaborated that Bharatanatyam is built on technique, control, tradition, and emotional depth, suggesting the film's portrayal treated it "like a wedding sangeet filmed during a mild earthquake." Carnatic musician Krithika Sivaswamy also criticized the industry's insensitivity to classical arts.

The controversial scene features Panday's character, Chandni, performing during a college event, with a Nataraja idol visible in the background, which many found particularly offensive given the perceived poor execution. While some reports indicate the sequence was designed as an amateur fusion, critics argue that even within that context, it failed to capture the essence and dignity of Bharatanatyam. One viral comment starkly stated, "Bharatanatyam was founded in 200 BCE and ended with Ananya Panday in 2026."

"Chand Mera Dil," directed by Vivek Soni, is a romantic drama starring Panday and Lakshya. Despite the widespread criticism for the dance sequence, the film has reportedly garnered over Rs 11 crore in India and Rs 13 crore worldwide by its opening weekend. Neither Ananya Panday nor the film's director has publicly addressed the ongoing controversy, though an assistant choreographer reportedly defended Panday's performance.
