Vancouver, B.C. – A new biography, Real Enough: The Unlikely Story of Doug and the Slugs, has quickly become a notable success, reaching No. 4 on the B.C. Bestsellers list. The Vancouver Sun highlighted the book, stating, "The man, the mystery, the slug: Real Enough revisits the life and legacy of Doug and the Slugs," a Canadian band celebrated for its unique sound and frontman Doug Bennett.

The book, co-authored by original Slugs keyboardist Simon Kendall and Vancouver historian Aaron Chapman, delves into the band's journey and the enigmatic personality of its lead singer, Doug Bennett. Chapman sought to answer how a graphic designer with unconventional musical talent managed to lead a band of seasoned musicians, according to the Vancouver Sun. Kendall revealed that Bennett's personal journals, featured in the book, show "real introspection about his creative process and his drinking," a surprising contrast to his public "bravado."

Doug and the Slugs formed in Vancouver in 1977, gaining prominence in the 1980s with hits like "Too Bad" and "Day By Day." The band was known for its upbeat, Motown-influenced pop-rock, fine musicianship, and exuberant live shows, carving a distinct niche in the Canadian music scene. Chapman emphasized the band's enduring appeal, noting that "the Doug and the Slugs story is still very much a success story."

Bennett, who was the band's chief songwriter and frontman, passed away in 2004 at the age of 53. The new book adds to a recent reappraisal of the band, following the 2022 documentary Doug and the Slugs and Me and a 2023 memoir by bandmate John Burton. The surviving members of Doug and the Slugs continue to perform, with Ted Okos now on lead vocals.
