Four individuals were injured in a shooting at Howe Community Park in Sacramento County on Saturday night, April 18, 2026, as sheriff's deputies were actively working to disperse a large, unauthorized gathering of several hundred people. The incident unfolded around 6:30 p.m. after initial reports of individuals with concealed weapons and a fight, prompting deputies to surround the park and initiate clearance procedures.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, deputies were making public address announcements to clear the area when they heard between 20 to 25 gunshots. Upon entering the park, officers located four victims – three with gunshot wounds and one with a laceration from being grazed – all of whom were transported to local hospitals in stable condition. Kevin Dalton, a social media user, highlighted the "madness" of the situation, stating in a tweet that deputies were "attempting to clear the hundreds of people at an 'unauthorized gathering' before the mass shooting started.
Shell casings were recovered at the scene within the park, but authorities did not find any weapons at the immediate location of the shooting. Despite the presence of hundreds of eyewitnesses, no suspect description has been released, a point emphasized by Dalton in his tweet: > "despite hundreds of eyewitnesses, no suspect description has been released." The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that this remains an active and ongoing investigation.
Later, a vehicle of interest was located in Fairfield, Solano County, approximately 50 miles from the park, leading to the detention of three individuals – two women and one man – by the Solano County Sheriff's Office. A firearm was discovered inside the vehicle during a search, though law enforcement officials have stated that the level of involvement of these detained individuals in the shooting is currently unknown.
Park officials had deemed the large assembly unauthorized and had specifically requested law enforcement assistance to clear the area due to safety concerns. Some local news outlets reported that the gathering might have been connected to UC Davis Picnic Day, an event for which authorities had already increased police presence to manage unsanctioned gatherings in surrounding areas. Sheriff's spokesperson Sgt. Ed Igoe commented on the brazenness of the shooters, stating, "This was a location we already had surrounded. Yet these individuals had the audacity to still start firing."
