London – Matilda Munro, niece of convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, has resigned from her role as a school governor at Columbia Primary School in London. The resignation, which occurred on March 27, 2026, follows the public unsealing of a letter she wrote to a federal judge in 2020, advocating for her aunt and asserting that Maxwell posed "no danger to the public."

The letter, addressed to New York District Court Judge Alison Nathan, was part of the extensive Jeffrey Epstein-related court documents recently made public. In her correspondence, Munro described her aunt's treatment as "punitive and unjust" and expressed concern over her prison conditions, arguing that Ghislaine Maxwell should be granted bail.

Munro, 41, served as the chair of the Local Governing Board for Columbia Primary School, which is part of The LETTA Trust, for four years. A spokesperson for The LETTA Trust confirmed her departure, while the school's newsletter to parents thanked her for her "dedicated service" and being a "star governor," without detailing the reasons for her resignation. Many parents were reportedly unaware of her familial connection to Ghislaine Maxwell until the letter's contents were revealed.

Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested in July 2020 and subsequently convicted in December 2021 on five out of six counts, including sex trafficking of a minor, for her role in recruiting and grooming underage girls for Jeffrey Epstein. She is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in the United States. Despite Munro's plea, Ghislaine Maxwell was never granted bail due to fears she would flee the country.

Matilda Munro is the daughter of Kevin Maxwell, Ghislaine's brother, who faced his own high-profile trial for fraud in the 1990s related to his father Robert Maxwell's financial empire, ultimately being acquitted. The unsealing of the Epstein files has continued to bring to light various connections and statements surrounding the disgraced financier and his associates, prompting public scrutiny of those who offered support.
