Craiova, Romania – Indian construction worker Vipin Kumar, 47, has been granted honorary citizenship by the city of Craiova, Romania, following his heroic rescue of a 5-year-old girl from an icy lake in January 2026. Kumar's selfless act involved holding the child above the freezing water for nearly 30 minutes until emergency services could arrive and complete the rescue. The city's mayor, Lia Olguța Vasilescu, proposed the honor in recognition of his extraordinary bravery.
The dramatic incident unfolded in Romanescu Park when the young girl fell through the ice. Reports indicate the girl's father also attempted a rescue but became trapped in the broken ice. Kumar, without hesitation, jumped into the frigid lake, risking his own life to keep the child safe despite the perilous conditions and prolonged exposure to the cold.
Craiova Mayor Lia Olguța Vasilescu officially announced the decision to award Kumar honorary citizenship, stating, "I decided to propose that he gets the title of honorary citizen. Craiova Local Council will formally grant the title, which comes with certain advantages." She further expressed hope that "his altruistic and humane gesture will inspire others," according to the Economic Times.
